Original Item: One of a Kind. This is just lovely, a well carved wood Ram's Horn Snuff Mull with sterling silver hinged lid engraved Cap't R. MURDOCH, with no other markings that we can find. Measures approximately 2 1/2” x 2 5/8” x 1 1/2”, and is in really great shape. The lid still closes securely, and has a lovely worn look.
The 42nd Regiment of Foot was first raised in 1715 after the First Scottish Rebellion to re-instate King James the Second and became a staunch supporter of the British Crown. At The Battle of Waterloo they suffered the most dreadful casualties including the Death of the Regimental Commander LIEUTENANT COLONEL SIR ROBERT MACARA . Much of the 19th Century the Regiment was stationed in Bermuda, Took part in the Crimean War followed by the Indian Mutiny. In the reforms of 1880 much of the Regiment became part of THE BLACK WATCH.
