Original Item: Only One Available. After the catastrophic winter of 1941-42 on the Eastern Front, the German military rapidly designed improved cold weather clothing. This included both uniform parkas as well as headgear, and the designs for these changed rapidly throughout the war.
Here we have a great Heer Army Winter Parka, one of many items developed for the cold eastern front during WWII. As with many of the "winter" items, they are reversible, with a wool "Mouse Grey" side, and a cotton white side, which is more off white now due to wear and age toning. This looks to be the "second pattern", which features "storm flaps" on the front closures for both sides, which helped prevent cold air and wind infiltration between the buttons. In this case the markings were stamped underneath the wool side storm flap with ink, so unfortunately the maker name cannot be read, however we can read the Gr. I, marking, for "Size 1", though we do not know if that is a larger or smaller size.
Both the hood and bottom drawstrings are present and move easily. The waist adjustment bands are still present inside the waist sleeve, though there are no buckles on the end, so we assume they would be tied together. The six button main closure retains all buttons on both sides, and the pockets retain theirs as well. The paint is well retained on both sides, which is definitely a rarity.
Overall condition is very good, especially considering that many of these would see post war service with the Bundeswehr or private individuals. There is wear and staining, but we do not see any major damage or repairs. A very rare and hard to find original World War II German reversible "Mouse Gray" winter parka. Comes more than ready for display!
