British Victorian Naval 1st Lord of the Admiralty Despatch Case Circa 1850

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Another amazing item from the marine collection IMA purchased originating from a castle museum closure in 2003.

This is an original despatch case, measuring 14.5 x 10.5 x 3 (inches) covered in red leather with several black leather cartouches each showing a gold Crown over V.R.

Brass carry handle on center of lid, across the forward edge of the lid in ¼-inch faded gold lettering reads- FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY, the lock marked- WRIGHT, MANUFACTURER, LONDON and again VR.

This is a most interesting and very rare Naval accessory from the heart of Victorian sea power, an internet listing of all the First Lords of the Admiralty with their dates of service is included with this dispatch case starting 1413 up until 1964.

The underside of the dispatch Case has a paper label bearing a Coat of Arms and the name "MICHAEL LORD SANDYS", not I regret one of the First Lords of the Admiralty but no doubt a relative that might be researched to discover this despatch case's original owner's identity.

Dating we imagine from the 1850’s, who can imagine the secret Naval documents this despatch box once contained.
