Original U.S. WWII Merchant Marine and Maritime Service Jumper with Cap - As Seen In Book

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This very uniform is featured on page 310 in the book U.S. Navy Uniforms in World War II Series: Weapons, Equipment, Insignia: Submarine Service, PT Boats, Coast Guard, Other Sea Services, Volume 6 by Jeff Warner. In fact this set was purchased by IMA from the estate of Mr. Warner along with much of his personal collection.

Petty officers and lower ranks wore Navy style jumper uniforms with Maritime Service insignia. This is the uniform of a first class Yeoman. Note the "U.S.M.S." hat ribbon and USMS rating badge. Members of the U.S. Merchant Marine and Maritime Service were paid civilian members of various seamen's unions, not members of the military or armed forces. Despite their non-military status, they were provided with uniforms and insignia in recognition of their service to the United States in wartime. These uniforms were only worn during academic study, training or special functions.

Rating badges were similar to those of the Navy but were embroidered entirely in red, as shown. The Specialty mark of crossed pen quills representing Yeoman is the same as that used by the Navy. The letters "USMS" on either side of an anchor represent the U.S. Maritime Service.

The back of the uniform jumper features USMS insignia on both corners of the collar flap in place of white stars worn on Navy uniforms.

The Merchant Marine ribbons seen here include, The Combat Bar (top), Pacific, Mediterranean a Zones (Left to right). The Combat Bar was awarded for serving on board a ship damaged or attack Stars were awarded for abandoning ship or serving on a ship that was sunk in action by the enemy. (J. Warner)
