Original British 19th Century Pewter Quart Tankard from HMS Gloucester
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is an original 19th century pewter quart-sized tankard with a Naval provenance. The tankard is perfectly standard and shows a lot of use. Its maker is James Yates, a well known Victorian pewter smith. It is scroll engraved:
HMS Gloucester was a 74-gun, third rate Vengeur-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1810s. She played a minor role in the Napoleonic Wars and was cut down into a 50-gun fourth rate frigate in 183132. The ship was converted into a receiving ship and broken up in 1884. No doubt towards the end she was used for only modest short duration tours, which brings us to another interesting feature. The tankard is covered all around the brim with multiple Capacity and Verification marks.
