This Graduation/Ceremonial Dress Dagger is a true masterpiece and a perfect representation of the stunning craftsmanship that goes into creating such a ceremonial weapon. It has been traditionally used by members of the Swedish Air Forces since 1930, with this M30/52 variant still being used today and is a remarkable piece of military history.
Despite the passage of time, this dagger is still in fantastic condition, with a striking appearance that is sure to impress anyone who sees it. The brass patina has mellowed over the years, adding to its vintage charm, while the leather scabbard has developed a light crazing that adds character to the piece.
By 1930 the Swedish air force was the youngest branch in the swedish armed forces. They wanted to follow the architecture movement of those days called “Functionalism”. However they wanted to build traditions as well. Previously only the Swedish Navy had used daggers but in 1930 the then new air force accepted the M1930 dagger with only one loop for the hanger. This was a very beautiful but not practical construction because the dagger turned around easily and would not appear presentable while in uniform. The M1930 dagger with one loop on the scabbard is not so commonly seen, but one complete with the chain hanger is rare. While the “M1930/52” example is identical to the earlier M1930, through what little information we could find is that it was just updated by replacing the defective scabbards.
This particular Swedish dagger has an interesting history. It was eventually copied by NSDAP Germany when they were in need of designing a dagger for the leaders of the HJ youth organization. It goes to show how designs can evolve and be adapted over time.
