Original Item: Only One Available. This is the standard design for an early American made Militia leather cartridge box. These types were seen in the Federal “Legion of the United States” period and were used up until the War of 1812 and later.
This gorgeous example has somewhat pliable leather for its age, and has aged very well, though there is leather loss on the bottom. The stitching of the leather is period and both belt loops are intact, very rare to see. The front of the flap has a lovely decorative brass rosette attached, which has always been on the box, with a prong visible on the interior. Also of note is that the original metal retaining loop which hooks onto the small metal tab on the bottom is still retained, though it does not secure it very strongly.
The interior wood is still in good shape with 24 slots for chargers, with all holes in good order. Interestingly, the box is indented to make it easier for use as a “belly box” with two rows of 10 holes and two holes at each end of the third row. As mentioned the bottom piece of leather is heavily wearing away but all other sides retain it well.
Overall this is still a very nice historical piece of equipment from the infancy years of the United States and it will display very nicely in your early Militia collections!
