Original Item: Only One Available. US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover with a very clear U.S. stencil on the front, in very good condition with the original issue sling. The canteen is of the early Indian Wars period, as it was made from a converted Civil War canteen. The back of the cover also has a faint Quartermaster’s stamp.
The canteen is complete with its original cork stopper secured to the neck of the canteen by a brass ring and chain. The cork itself is a bit worn down with material loss and has shrunk due to age. It also has the proper pattern leather shoulder strap, of the later adjustable style in fair condition, but has dried out and heavy cracks and scaling are present in the finish, which is expected. There is a set of inspector’s initials stamped on the sling. The Quartermaster stamp on the cover is incomplete but shows MASS… / QUARTERMASTER…. DEPT., likely denoting issue to the Massachusetts national guard. There is a lot of newer-looking green stitching on the top half of the cover.
There is denting on the body, and the cover has the expected water stains and wear to the canvas. A great chance to pick up a good example of this iconic canteen!
