Original Item: Only One Available. This is a US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover that went through a very long service history. The canteen began life as an M1858 Canteen during the Civil War, and was updated to the M1878 after the war, though there were no loops added for a shoulder strap. The canteen was again arsenal-modified in order to update it to the M1902 specifications, with the M1902 canteen hanger stitched directly onto the cover.
This example saw use by the National Guard of Pennsylvania. On one side it is stenciled:
4
N.G.P.
K
And it is stenciled 53 on the other side. The canteen saw use over a 50 year period and shows heavy wear because of that. The spout is now broken at one side, and the cork is now very tight inside the hole, and we could not remove it.
A very interesting canteen that saw a long arduous service life. Ready to display.
