Original Item: Only one available. This is a heavily worn example of an Indian Wars Issue Model 1872 chasseur-style kepi in fair mothy condition, as issued to both enlisted men and officers during this period. This example is missing both buttons and the chinstrap, and has some heavy moth damage across.
This Federal Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 2 1/4" high at the front, 4 1/2" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is missing the lining. The Moroccan leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of tarred leather.
The interior crown is stamped with a maker’s mark for Ridabock & Co. at Grand Street, New York City. There is wear but the mark is still mostly legible. The original lining is now gone as shown. The underside of the sweatband has the initials A.B.B..
There is heavy wear to the exterior with some tearing and moth damage.
