  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a scarce variant of cartridge box known as the No. 2 Hagner. In 1873 the cavalry board agreed to the use of the Hagner 45 cal Cartridge Box intended for the 45/70 cal.  The Hagner was smaller than the Hagner No1 as it differed in cartridge layout and was thought to of only be issued as a cavalry model although this was not proven.  The Hagners were issued as a pair holding 24 rounds in each, these were to stay in use for the next decade.

This example is interesting as the securing strap and knob have been reversed, done during the period. The end of the strap has been stamped A.R.S. and J.H.WM., likely the initials of the inspectors who facilitated this repair/alteration during the Indian Wars.

The box is in good condition although the front securing strap is heavily worn and crazing. The canvas bullet loops are all intact and the front is embossed US. The back is VERY faintly stamped No. 2. The belt loops on the back are fully intact and the leather is a little bit crazed, but there is no serious cracking present. This is a very scarce model of cartridge box to find, used during the early 1870s.

This is a great example, ready for further research and display.
