  • Original Item. Only One Available. The Imperial German Navy or the Imperial Navy (German: Kaiserliche Marine) was the navy of the German Empire, which existed between 1871 and 1919. It grew out of the small Prussian Navy (from 1867 the North German Federal Navy), which was mainly for coast defense. Kaiser Wilhelm II greatly expanded the navy. The key leader was Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, who greatly expanded the size and quality of the navy, while adopting the sea power theories of American strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan. The result was a naval arms race with Britain, as the German navy grew to become one of the greatest maritime forces in the world, second only to the Royal Navy.

This is a very interesting miniature WWI German Kaiserlichemarine Officer’s dagger complete with a "lightning bolt" style brass scabbard. It measures 7¼ inches long, with a 5⅛ inch long nickel plated blade.

The blade is marked on the ricasso:

    V. ISOLA

    And on the other side

    ALEMANIA

Alemania is Spanish for Germany, so this denotes that the miniature dagger was manufactured in Spain by the maker V. Isola, who we could not find any information on. This was probably purchased or given to a high ranking Kaiserlichemarine Officer, for use on their desk or elsewhere.

The scabbard is also engraved V. ISOLA. The letter opener is in very good condition, with the expected wear on the finish from age and use. The nickel plating on the blade is retained quite well, though there is definitely some scratching and plating flaking, which has led to oxidation. There is a very nice miniature size sword knot wrapped around the hilt, which does have some fraying and tearing.

A very interesting German Naval letter opener, ready to display!

    Specifications:
    Blade Length: 5 ⅛”
    Overall length: 7 1/4”
    Scabbard: 5 ¼”
