Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an interesting transit case for a German field hospital microscope, which was sent home by American soldier Sydney Grace living on Commonwealth Avenue in a city in Massachusetts. The crate measures 8 ¼ x 9 ¼ x 18 ¼” and the handle has broken off but is still in the case.
The crate interior retains the partially torn instruction sheet showing the maker as Ernst Leitz of Wetzlar. The lid of the crate is marked:
Stets
aufrecht
stellen
Mikroskopier-
Ausrüstung
We believe the soldier who sent this home was Captain Sydney Grace, the battalion surgeon for an armored field artillery battalion in the 4th Armored Division who was awarded the Silver Star Medal with OLC for saving lives under fire. This requires some more research, however.
