U.S. WWII John F. Kennedy PT-109 Patrol Torpedo Boat 33 3/4" Wood Model

Item Description

Replica Item: Only One Available. This is a very detailed wooden model of PT-109, the WWII PT (Patrol Torpedo) that was under the command of future U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. It looks to get from the 1980s, and most likely was made from a kit. It measures approximately 33 3/4" x 9"W x 9"H (counting the antenna), which would make it 1:28.5 scale. Overall condition is very good but a few small parts have broken off and are missing or have been glued back on. The boat is painted a dark green, with correct decals for the insignia and control panel. It only retains one torpedo, so we assume that the other 3 were lost at some point. There is some debate over what the correct color of PT-109 was, as the PT boats in the pacific theater were repainted from the original gray when they were in service.

A very nice display piece that would look great as part of any WWII Naval display!

PT-109 was an 80' Elco PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) last commanded by Lieutenant (junior grade) John F. Kennedy, future United States president, in the Solomon Islands campaign of the Pacific theater during World War II. Kennedy's actions in saving his surviving crew after PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer earned him several commendations and made him a war hero. Back problems stemming from the incident required months of hospitalization at Chelsea Naval Hospital and plagued him the rest of his life. Kennedy's postwar campaigns for elected office referred often to his service on PT-109.
