  • Original Item: Only One Available. This was known as a Indicator Type R-65/APN-9, Loran (Long Range Navigation) device developed by US Army Signal Corps and used on airplanes like B-17 and B-25s.

The Loran Mk 2 AN/APN-9 was a position-finding navigational aid which provided fixes of position within the service area of a chain of Loran transmitters. It was a smaller and more simplified version of Loran Mk I AN/APN-4. It was generally fitted in small aircraft where Loran was required but the bulk and weight of Loran I were prohibitive. Pulses from a pair of transmitters were received and displayed on a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display, and a position line on a Loran chart was identified. Like Loran Mk I it was primarily designed for use over water and maximum range was in the region of 700 miles: it also operated on four pre set channels in the range 1.75 Mc/s to 1.95 Mc/s

This example has a data plate that reads:

    Signal Corps U.S. Army

    Receiver-Indicator R-65/APN-9

Serial No. A3277 Order No. 926-DAY-44

    Radio Corporation of America

    Camden, New Jersey

    80/115 volts 360-2640 cycles

We have no clue if it functions but it sure is cool to look at and it is small enough to display in any collection, it measures 12 x 18 x 8.

Perfect for any WWII communications or aircraft collectors, you just won’t see one of these again anytime soon!
