  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous 1:5 Scale model of what we believe to be the M1875 Mountain Gun, but it could also possibly be a 3-Inch Ordnance Rifle, Model 1861. A Hotchkiss design from the French arms firm, Hotchkiss & Company founded by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, "it was the first original breech-loading gun in the U.S. Army". It replaced the earlier M1841 mountain howitzer used since about 1837, a decade before the Mexican–American War of 1846–1848 in U.S. Army service. It served with cavalry units during the late American Indian Wars, including the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, and was also used during the 1898 Spanish–American War in Cuba and the Philippine–American War (Philippines Insurrection) of 1899–1902 in the Philippine Islands.

The cannon appears to match the description of the M1875, although we couldn’t find examples with ammunition crates to each side of the cannon. We were told that this model was in use for training purposes at the West Point Military Academy.

The cannon is in great shape, measuring roughly 10” long in total length, and is still well-attached to its carriage. The elevation screw is missing a piece at the top which allowed for proper attachment to the cascabel. However it will still display just fine. The carriage has two ammunition boxes, one to each side of the barrel, which still open and close.

The pintle hook still attaches well to the limber, which has two ammunition crates of its own which still open and close. The pole is still intact as well, but it is a bit loose and is more or less wedged in place. With the limber attached, the entire set measures roughly 32" x 10 ½" x 8”.

A tremendous model cannon built to very detailed specifications, one of the nicest models we have ever offered! Comes ready for further research and display!
