Original Item: Only One Available. Almost certainly a British soldier's "bring back" this is a totally original to the period ZULU war axe, traditionally referred to as a selepe, carried in the left hand behind the cowhide shield. The short stabbing iklwa spear was carried in the right hand.
This is one of the longer examples we have had, with the iron blade measuring just over 13½" mounted on a wood shaft of just over 16½", with an overall length of about 24”. Sharp edge long ago dulled probably to save the children in the British soldier's household, but it is still somewhat sharp. The blade is still tight to the shaft, which is rare to see on these.
A Classic, unique is design, ZULU weapon from the time of their greatest victory at Isandlwanna and final defeat in 1879 at Ulundi.
