Original Zulu Leather Wrapped Small Knobkierie War Club

Item Description

Original Item: Dating from the Victorian era this is almost certainly a British Soldier's War Souvenir. After the loss of half the Regiment (the 24th of Foot) at the Battle of Isandhwana in January of 1879 followed by the epic stand at Rorke's Drift two days later, the British Government mobilized a mass of troops to bring the Zulu nation to it's knees before the end of the year. This happened at the Battle of Ulundi but the reputation of the Zulu Warriors as the fiercest that British troops had ever faced was assured.

Every Soldier wanted a War trophy to show his future grand children.

This knobkerrie, just imported from an English collection, is just 22-inches in overall length with a 3-inch ball. It is carved from a single piece of wood and the shaft has a leather wrap covering 7 inches of the length providing a solid handgrip.

There are a couple of very old chips from the ball indicating that this really saw service, the bottom of the shaft has a hole for mounting a leather wrist thong.

Offered in very nice matured condition this was almost certainly recovered from the battlefield.
