Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is genuine U.S. Navy Mark I Deck Clock, made by the Chelsea Clock Co. of Boston, Mass. It is mounted in a heavy brass case attached by a hinge to a very heavy backing plate, and has a 5 1/4" black dial. It features hour and minute hands on the main dial, with a smaller dial for the seconds. The clock is non-working as far as we can tell, and the glass crystal in front of the dial is long gone, with just a few bits present around the edges. There is corrosion on the hands now, and the radium paint dots have all turned brown due to degradation of the fluorescent material.
The mounting plate has a hole in the center, which shows the back of the clock, where it would originally have been wound and had the time set. There is an adjustment for the speed of the clock, as well as a "STOP" hacking function to freeze the seconds for clock synchronization.
The face reads as follows:
MARK I. DECK CLOCK
U.S. NAVY
Ⓝ 312 1938
The back of the movement bears scratched in number 284276, which should be the serial number, though we may not have read it right, as that would indicate manufacturer in approximately 1941. It may be that the movement was replaced at some point. It also has the markings 33△WP / 84-5815-C scratched in on the left side, definitely a potential avenue for further research.
Clock face measures approximately 5 1/4 inches in diameter, with the outer housing measuring about 7 1/8 inches in diameter at the front, and 8 1/8 inches at the back. It measures about 3 inches deep including the substantial brass backing plate.
The US Navy used these throughout WWII to help indicate the time while on deck, and afterwards. Would make a fantastic display piece for any Naval collection with the heavy brass housing. It also may be possible to have it serviced and returned to functionality. Ready to display!
