Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original WWII U.S. Navy 3-inch/50 caliber Mk 6 wooden dummy cartridge, manufactured in 1944 and intended for training gun crews in the handling, loading, unloading, and fuze-setting procedures associated with full-size naval ammunition. The round is completely inert and cannot function as live ammunition or be converted into an explosive device. As with all deactivated or dummy ordnance, this item is not available for export.
This is a good example which is not marked on the fuze. The fuze has a wooden tip and steel base. The bottom of the casing is faintly stamped:
329486-B-6 BFT (ANCHOR) HMC 1944
3” DUMMY CARTRIDGE MK 6-50 CAL.
This denotes a 1944 manufacture date. The round has some cracking in the wood body as shown, primarily one large crack running down the side. The round comes in its original box which is in very rough condition and is marked:
1-3” DUMMY CARTRIDGE MK 6-50 CAL.
CONTRACT NO. NORD 5868
The other side is marked FROM: HARRIS MFG. CO. / JOHNSON CITY, TENN..
The combination of the 1944-dated Mk 6 wooden dummy cartridge, original wooden fuze, steel fuze base, HMC and anchor markings, original shipping box, Contract NOrd 5868, and Harris Manufacturing Company address makes this a particularly strong example of WWII U.S. Navy training ordnance. The large body crack and rough crate condition are important age-related issues, but the survival of both the dummy round and its original shipping container gives the set considerable historical and display value.
