Original Item. Only One Available. This is an excellent original U.S. WWII wooden ammunition crate for 12-gauge shotgun cartridges loaded with No. 8 chilled shot, retaining extensive original stenciling across both the front and lid. The bold surviving markings and matching lot information give the crate very strong display appeal for a WWII small-arms or ammunition collection.
The front of the crate reads
360 CARTRIDGES SHOTGUN 12 GAGE
IN CARTONS
T3AGE
NO. 8 CHILLED SHOT
55 WT 23005
.9 CU LOT WRA
The lid of the crate reads SMALL ARMS AMMUNITION LOT WRA 23005, so this is a great matching set. There are no threaded posts retained and no wing nuts, so the lid does not secure shut, and there is some material loss at one of the four holes in the lid. It does sit for display, and measures approximately 10 1/4" x 8" x 19 3/4".
The WRA marking identifies Winchester Repeating Arms in connection with the ammunition lot. The surviving 23005 lot number appears on both the crate body and lid, making the two components a particularly desirable matching set.
Shotgun ammunition saw military use during WWII for a variety of training, guard, security, and specialized purposes. Wooden shipping crates such as this were used to transport boxed cartridges in bulk and were marked prominently so that ammunition type, quantity, packing method, and lot information could be identified quickly.
The combination of the 360-round 12-gauge designation, T3AGE marking, No. 8 Chilled Shot identification, matching WRA 23005 lot markings, and surviving original lid makes this an especially attractive WWII ammunition crate. The missing threaded posts and wing nuts, together with the material loss around one lid hole, are the principal condition issues, while the strong exterior stenciling remains the defining feature of the piece.
