Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind: This is certainly a unique uniform grouping that recently was found “Out of the Woodwork” from an estate in New England. This is an “untouched” set, offered just as it came to us. The uniform is a common Enlisted Man’s uniform for a Sergeant assigned to the Air Transport Command. What makes this particular uniform grouping stand out is the fact that the uniform came with two Military Police Brand Piped Overseas Caps, and the left shoulder of the Ike Jacket is fitted with a unique handmade Military Police Brand Colored Lanyard. Most likely Sergeant Lees served as a MP assigned to the Air Transport Command, likely conducting Airfield Security, or escorting VIPs, or sensitive items aboard transport aircraft. This would be an excellent opportunity to conduct additional research!
The uniform itself is a 1944 manufactured “Ike” Jacket in size 36L. The left sleeve features an Army Air Force Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) with an Air Transport Command Scroll above. The right sleeve features a Bermuda Base Command SSI. Embroidered Sergeant Chevrons adorn both sleeves. At the left cuff are two overseas bars, denoting one year spent overseas At the collar is a “U.S.” Disk (srewback), and an “Air Corps” Collar Disk (clutchback). Below are a matched pair of pinback Air Transport Command Distinctive Unit Insignias. Above the left pocket is an unmarked Sterling Silver Aircrewman’s Wing, fitted on the jacket with early style clutches. It should be noted that ALL the insignia shows evidence of having been on this uniform for a VERY long time!
In addition, a Khaki Military Police Branch Piped Overseas Cap in matching olive drab wool, fitted with an Army Transport Command Pin comes with the uniform, along with a matching cap in Khaki.
In the pocket of the Jacket was found a single dogtag identifying the owner as James W Lees Jr., Army Serial Number 31492709. Lees’s cooresponding GI Laundry number is also stamped inside the Khaki MP piped Overseas Cap. In addition to the dogtag, a WWII Victory Medal Ribbon and an American Campaign Medal Ribbon were found in the same pocket.
Lee’s National Archives File is available online at this link.
This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a unique uniform grouping from a rather obscure AAF formation from WWII!
