  • Original Item: Only One Available.  Offered in very nice condition this genuine WWII Private Purchase fighting knife. While not official U.S. issue, private purchase knives were extremely common during the war. Multiple variations were made various different blade shapes and handle materials, which filled the demand when issue fighting knives were scarce.

This example has a 6 1/4 inch long double-edged spear point blade, which is 1 1/2 inches wide at the guard. It has a brass S-shaped cross guard, and a large plastic handle, which appears to be Bakelite. The grip is secured to the knife by a brass pommel cap, which screws onto the tang, and is personalized with the owners name and date:

    JOE
    ALLEN
    1944

This knife has definitely been used, and appears to have been sharpened several times. The blade does have some rust and pitting, but is solid and quite heavy. The blade is also still quite sharp, though the edge has small nicks in many places. The grip has shrunk slightly over time, so there is a cardboard spacer between the pommel cap and grip.

The leather scabbard appears original, though it does have some cracks and splitting. Leather is stiff, though appears mostly solid. The snap is functional, though the retaining strap definitely more worn than the rest of the scabbard.

Overall a great used example of a quality private purchase survival knife.
