Original WWII Large EG Waterman E.G.W. Leather Grip Survival Knife with Named Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Offered in very nice condition, this is a genuine U.S. WWII fighting knife, produced by E.G. Waterman Company of New York City. This knife comes with its original scabbard, which has the name of the owner stamped onto the back.

These knives were very popular among USGIs during WWII due to their versatility. While not official U.S. issue, private purchase knives were extremely common. Multiple variations were made with both wood and leather handles (see page 165 of U.S. Military Knives Collector's Guide By Silvey & Boyd). This example has a stacked leather handle, similar to many other military knives of the period. Overall length of the knife is 11 inches, with a 6 1/2 inch "bowie" blade, which has both a sawback and a bottle opener, making it a true survival tool.

The ricasso is factory-stamped with the classic up-side down marking:

E.G.W
KNIFE

These fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war and most purchased knives were used as intended - in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW's high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the War in presentable condition such as this.

This knife does show use and sharpening, however most of the original factory grind marks can be seen on the blade bevels. It has not been sharpened enough to change the original blade profile, though the saw back is now somewhat worn. The original lanyard loop on the bottom is still attached. There is light staining and corrosion in many areas, as shown. The leather grip is in very good shape, showing only light wear.

The leather scabbard appears original, and the leather is in good shape, though it is a bit stiff from age. There is however no major cracking, even on the retaining strap, which still has a functional snap. The back of the scabbard has been ink stamped with the name of the owner: JOHN N. JONES, JR.. There are a few paint marks on the back of the scabbard.

A great example of an EG Waterman survival knife & scabbard from WWII, ready to add to your collection!
