Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is an exceptional Word War Two Japanese flag, captured by USMC soldiers and turned into a victory flag by a local Japanese artist. During WW2 the During the War the 10th Marine Regiment under the command of the 2nd Marine Division was involved in the assault on Guadalcanal and later took part in the bloody battles of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. The 13th Marines under the command of the 5th Marine Division played an important role during the Battle of Iwo Jima. This captured Japanese flag was painted shortly after the surrender of Japan while the United States Marine Corps was on occupation duty in Nagasaki, Japan. During that time local artisans customized many pieces for American soldiers. Many personal items were engraved, painted and created for the soldiers to bring home as gifts or mementos of their time in the service. This incredible flag is such a piece.

This Japanese National flag is constructed of silk and measures 28" x 38". It features a highly detailed Tiger head int he center of the red circle, an EGA Eagle Globe Anchor USMC insignia in the upper left corner, 2nd Marine Division insignia in the lower left corner a 5th Marine Division insignia in the lower righthand corner. It read Nagasaki Japan 10th Marines, 2nd Div and 13th Marines, 5th Div. The flag has areas of staining and wear but is in overall very good vibrant condition. A truly unique souvenir from a Marine's time in the Pacific Theater of Operations!
