Original Japanese WWII Army Officer Type 19 Kyu-Gunto Sword with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice condition Japanese Army Officer Type 19 Kyu-Gunto Sword, with a nickel-plated blade and a fine all brass hilt. The hilt has a pommel cap which acts to retain a nut which in turn secures the tang of the blade. The backstrap and grip tabs are decorated with 10 petal cherry blossom flowers, with the balance of the surfaces being nicely pebbled. The “D” guard curves downward to a pierced basket hilt, and is decorated with the same floral pattern. The quillon end tapers to a teardrop that is decorated with a lined "scroll" design.

The grip of this sword is of hard black plastic or bakelite, and is highly ribbed. The ribs are wrapped with a skein of brass wires, the center strand being twisted. The steel scabbard is in excellent condition.

The blade is in good condition and measures approximately 29 1/4 inches long. It is nickel-plated, and the tip is in the usual Japanese geometry. Unfortunately over the years, the nickel plate has degraded in places, so the underlying steel has oxidized. However it still retains over 85% of the original plating, and the simulated temper line (hamon) can still bee seen in many places.  There is a fuller that runs nearly all the way to the tip.

The black painted steel scabbard is in good condition as well, with some dents, but none that impair the fitting of the sword.

A great Japanese piece here, in very nice condition and priced to sell.
