Original WWII Japanese Navy Officer P1937 Kai-Gunto Katana Samurai Sword with Scabbard - Matching Numbers

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent condition naval-issue officer katana. The blade is in nearly perfect condition with only a few very minor scuffs, it is still sharp and nick free. Blade length is 25.75 and overall length 36.5. Machine forged blade, with one mounting hole in the squared off tang where there is a Naval ANCHOR stamp. The blade retains all of the original factory finish, with a replica temper line. Japanese Kai-Gunto naval officers swords are somewhat rare, given that they usually went down with the ships. This particular example has the higher grade 1937 Pattern fittings with the sharkskin wrapped scabbard, indicating this may have been made for a front line naval officers.

Heavy brass tsuba (cross guard) with gold highlighted menuki (grip decoration), and a nice gold highlighted Kashira (End Cap), bamboo securing peg still present. The Seppa (spacers) around the tsuba are large and highly stylized. Excellent ray skin Sa-Me (grip) with complete olive-colored Ito (cloth binding) with fine decorative collar. Condition of the blade, scabbard and fittings is superb, indicating light use.

The Wood scabbard is wrapped in lacquered sharkskin, and has brass copper and gold highlights. Two hanging loops are present, complete with one leather sword hanger. The condition is very good, with a few significant dents and splitting of the sharkskin. The crossguard, spacers, top cap, and grip are all marked 79, indicating an original matched set made for this specific blade. The top of the grip is itself is marked in ? ?, the Japanese characters for 7 (nana) and 9 (kyuu). The tsuka (handle) is extremely well fitting, so the securing pin can be difficult to remove.
