Original Item: Only One Set Available. Brought back from the Pacific Theater of WWII, this is a very interesting Japanese Army WWII Flag set! It consists of a National "Meatball" flag, pole topper, and carrying case. The flag is what looks to be rayon construction, with the design dyed onto it. The flag comes with an original pole topper in an original Japanese flag carrying case with a rotating ring at the base that changes the date in Kanji appearing on a cut-out area to one side, a very interesting design!
The flag itself measures 24 x 35” and does not have any corner reinforcements or tie strings. What is interesting is that five Kanji characters stamped at one edge, two of which are the name of the Emperor, Hirohito. The other 3 are stamped going the opposite direction and may mean Prince or Emperor.
The pole topper is repaired with what looks like electrical tape, having broken off of its small pole. The ball is still reflective but does have some flaws.
The carrying case is very interesting, depicting the Rising Sun and Meatball flags crossed behind four large Kanji characters, the middle two of which appear to mean “Flag Storage”. The ring on the bottom rotates a ring in the center that changes the date shown, the top purple characters being the month and the bottom red characters being the day. The case when closed measures 14 ½” tall and has a 3 ¾” base diameter.
A very interesting set, ready for further research and display!
