Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Purchased directly from a veteran's family this is a very nice condition katana in standard Shin-Gunto Japanese Army fittings.
The blade is old, we are told ancient, due to a few tell tale characteristics that are:
- Single Hole in Tang.
- Hole in tang is punch not drilled
- Folded steel blade (fold lines are evident on the spine)
- Vibrant Visible temper line ("hamon").
- Clear grain (hada) including nie and nioi along temper line.
Offered in very good condition with only spots of light surface pitting, it is still sharp and nick free. Blade length is approximately 25.5 and overall length 36.5. This is a handmade blade, with a single mounting hole in the rounded off tang. Very attractive temper line visible, as well as highly visible grain along the temper line and blade surface.
Round tsuba (cross guard) with gold highlighted standard army menuki (grip decoration), and a nice Kashira (End Cap), one bamboo securing peg still present. Excellent sharkskin Sa-Me (grip) with complete brown Ito (cloth binding) in excellent condition. The Scabbard (saya) is painted wood, and is covered with a worn leather scabbard cover, which is signed by the owner. The cover originally had a snap above the signature, but this has pulled out. The matching leather attaching strap on the tsuka (handle) is completely missing, but the tsuba (guard) and seppa (spacers) have the cutout for the strap. In addition, the saya (scabbard) and tsuka (handle) have the number 15 written in pencil on the inside, indicating that they are a matching pair.
It has been over one thousand years ago that the art of making swords appeared in Japan. The swordsmiths of the time may not have known it but they were creating a legendary sword. The Samurai sword has seen combat in many battlefields. From the early days of the Samurai warrior to the fierce battles in the South Pacific during WWII.
Each hand-made Samurai sword is unique because it is forged from steel stock. A tremendous amount of work is dedicated to creating these pieces. They were an instrument of war as much as a beautiful artifact to adorn a room.
The Samurai sword has grown to be one of the most highly desired military antiques.
