  • Original Item: Only One Available. The M33 Helmet (Elmetto Mod. 33 in Italian) is a steel combat helmet designed in the 1930s in Italy, and was the standard combat helmet of the Regio Esercito up to World War II, and of the Esercito Italiano well into the Cold War. Designed by Nicola Leszl for the Mussolini Government, these have become extremely hard to find on the collectors market today, especially WWII examples that have not been refurbished.

This is a very interesting example which has been entirely painted with a heavy tan and brown sand camouflage, likely for use in Africa. It is marked to the front with a naval anchor with a rope around it, for the Regia Marina, the Italian Navy. To the left of the helmet is an interesting shield insignia with the colors of the Italian flag and a black X over it, definitely worthy of more research. There is heavy wear to the paint and the insignia as shown. The exterior paint is roughly 60% retained

We have examined the paint wear under magnification and photographed it under UV (black light), and there is no fluorescence of any kind, indicating that the paint is consistent with WWII era or earlier manufacture. See photographs of the helmet under UV light in the listing.

The interior shows that the leather liner has very heavy cracking and wear, but it has the correct Z-shaped stitching. The leather chinstrap, which has a wartime-correct buckle appears to be a replacement, therefore it is still intact and is in better condition. There is perforation in the liner for the size, 59. The rear of the shell is stamped P3.

A very interesting Italian Navy helmet, ready for further research and display!
