Original Item: Only One Available. The M33 Helmet (Elmetto Mod. 33 in Italian) is a steel combat helmet designed in the 1930s in Italy, and was the standard combat helmet of the Regio Esercito up to World War II, and of the Esercito Italiano well into the Cold War. Designed by Nicola Leszl for the Mussolini Government, these have become extremely hard to find on the collectors market today, especially WWII examples that have not been refurbished.
This is an excellent example of an M33 helmet with a lovely hand-painted Artillery stencil to the front. The exterior shows heavy oxidation overtaking the paint, with similar oxidation to the interior. The liner is in good shape overall, retaining the complete wartime leather chinstrap. The liner is perforated with the size, 56. The artillery stencil composes of crossed cannons under a flaming bomb with VV in the center. This exact model of stencil appears to denote “Heavy Campal Artillery” from a chart we found.
The rear brim is stamped S-106, and there is a stress crack in the shell splitting through that number, rare to see on an M33. Along the interior rim on one side is a scribbled name, likely of the wearer. The liner has the correct Z-stitching denoting wartime manufacture. There is some tearing to the liner from dry rot as shown but the drawstring is retained.
