  • Original Item: Only One Available. The "Bustina" field cap was originally introduced in 1933 and was worn by both Army and Fascist militia personnel, with minor variations. This example was worn by a Captain in the Italian Infantry with a tag on the interior reading 31, which could be a size or perhaps a regiment.

This green grey wool field cap features fold down side panels that are held together over the crown of the cap by two corresponding hidden snaps. The front visor is in the upright position. To the front is a very fine embroidered bullion Italian Army infantry cap insignia, with no number in the center, so it is worn broadly by infantry officers. Also, on the left side are 2 embroidered gold bullion rank stars denoting the rank of Captain.

The interior is fully lined in a green/gray rayon/silk with no sweatband. There are no markings we could find other than the 31 tag. Size is approximately US 6 ¾.

The combination of the green-gray wool construction, concealed-snap side panels, upright visor, bullion infantry officer insignia, two Captain’s rank stars, full rayon/silk lining, and surviving 31 interior tag makes this a strong representative example of an Italian Army officer’s field cap from the WWII period. Its unnumbered infantry badge and officer rank insignia give it especially good display value while leaving some room for further research into the meaning of the interior tag.
