Original Item: Only One Set Available. Brought back from the Pacific Theater of WWII, this is a great Imperial Japanese Navy Flag set! It consists of both the Legendary "Rising Sun" flag, with the sun correctly moved to the left side for a Navy flag, and a National "Meatball" flag. Both flags are the standard canvas multi-piece construction used on medium sized ships, and are in very good condition.
The rising sun flag measures 66"H x 100"W, which is about 5 1/2" x 8 1/3", and has thick hanging lanyards at each end, which extends through the entire white canvas header. The national flag is just a bit smaller, at 63"H x 100"W, and has small woven grommets at each end of the header. Both have extra material sewn in to reinforce the corners, and are in very good condition.
They both show some slight fading and age toning, but that is to be expected on flags that are around 75 years old. Otherwise they do not have any major tears, holes, or other issues. These would make an excellent wall cover for any Japanese collection display.
The Rising Sun Flag (旭日旗 Kyokujitsu-ki) design was originally used by feudal warlords in Japan during the Edo period. On May 15, 1870, as a policy of the Meiji government, it was adopted as the war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army, and on October 7, 1889, it was adopted as the naval ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy (Naval flags have the sun off center to the left). With the sun in the center, this is a flag of the IJA (Imperial Japanese Army).
The Japanese call their country's flag Hinomaru (日の丸), which translates literally to "circle of the sun", referencing the red circle on a white field. It embodies the country's sobriquet: Land of the Rising Sun.
