Original WWII Imperial Japanese Navy Flag Set: Hinomaru National Flag & Ship Pennant Flag

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Set Available. Brought back from the Pacific Theater of WWII, this is a great Imperial Japanese Navy Flag set! It consists of both a Japanese "Hinomaru" National "Meatball" flag as well as a large Pennant Flag taken from a Japanese ship. These were acquired recently from the family of the WWII Pacific Veteran who captured them at a military show. We unfortunately do not have any further information.

The Hinomaru "Meatball" flag is made from delicate sheer silk cloth, and measures 28" 37" in size. It is almost as light weight as a "float flag" used by downed pilots, and shows wear around the edges. There are some tears as well as staining, and the corner reinforcements are worn, with the hang ties missing.

The pennant flag looks to be made of wool with a sturdy canvas header. It measures 35" in hoist with a fly of 72", and a 32" halyard rope hanging from the bottom of the header. The top has a hanging loop for attachment to a ship. The pennant is mostly blue with white "waves" running down the middle, and a large red Kanji character in the center. We unfortunately have not been able to identify this character.

A great IJN bring back set!

The Japanese call their country's flag Hinomaru (日の丸), which translates literally to "circle of the sun", referencing the red circle on a white field. It embodies the country's sobriquet: Land of the Rising Sun.
