Original Item: Only One Available. Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of medieval knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since then to identify membership or function in various military and law enforcement organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used throughout the Third Reich.
This is a lovelyexample of a German WWII Luftwaffe Air Traffic Controller's Gorget. These would have been worn at not only formal events but in the field as well, to make it clear who held an important position in the Reichs-Luftaufsicht (National Air Supervision). Similar gorgets were used in other parts of the NSDAP organizational structure, indicating those who held a special position.
The gorget is constructed of all non-magnetic materials, most likely aluminum or brass. The main body definitely appears to be solid alloy, which has a lovely matte gray paint job, which could be aluminized paint. The painted brass insignia on the front features a large set of wings connected to a circle, with a gilt "mobile" NSDAP Swas in the middle. Below this is another brass badge reading REICHS-LUFT-AUFSICHT, for National Air Traffic Control. The insignia are all tightly attached to the body.
These were hung around the neck, and usually have one hook on the back so it hangs in the center or to the side. This example retains its original chain which is still affixed to the hooks on the reverse. The longer center hook is still present, and displays maker information: C.E. JUNCKER / Berlin. This German company was originally founded as a “Military Effects” shop in 1851. They sold uniforms, helmets and decorations. Juncker made thousands of decorations during the reign of AH and the Third Reich until the site in Berlin was bombed in 1944.
Overall condition is very good with some heavy wear on the front of the plate and chain. The green oilcloth faux leather covering is still in great shape, showing only light wear. These are among the hardest to find examples of German World War Two Gorgets. Ready to display!
