Item Description

Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. Hauptgefreiter August Dippel or Kriesmarine Matrosenhauptgefreiter was captured at the close of WWII and was held at various POW camps after the war in part some run by the 78 British Infantry Division. Included in the set are Dippel's Soldbuch and some POW documents as well as a German 2nd Model Naval Dagger by Carl Eickhorn. Now, as Dippel was an enlisted man, this dagger did not belong to him, but was taken by a U.S. or British soldier along with Dippel's Soldbuch.

The dagger is a nice totally original WWII German 2nd Model Naval Dagger by Carl Eickhorn. This 2nd Model Naval Dagger was probably purchased by an officer early in the period as the pommel is a 1938 changeover type. It has very deeply inset wings and an impressive vault wreath. The details to this bird are also choice, with a striking eye, beak and breast. The crossguard is a standard Eickhorn type.

The grip is in nice solid condition with no cracks or chips. The brass wire that wraps around the grip is absent.

The lightning bolt scabbard is straight and shows hand wear, but that is to be expected as this dagger was worn throughout the period. The scabbard is stamped with well-defined palmettes around the bands and lightning bolts, ermine feet and acanthus leaves down to the chape. The bands feature overlapping oak leaves and acorns. The rings are the triple serrated type and also show little wear. The throat is retained by two dome head screws.

The blade is decent but has seen age and wear. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the 1935-41 Eickhorn Squirrel trademark. The tip of the blade is intact.

The Kriegsmairne Soldbuch is a well used example with almost every page showing handwriting or ink stamps. Some pages are loose and the cover was de-nazified. Inside the book are a few pages of post war POW papers, naming Dippel and signed by various Allied officers.
