Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Army Officer's Dagger, produced by the rare and very desirable Solingen-based firm Ernst Pack & Söhne, M.B.H. Waffenfabrik. The plated aluminum pommel of this dagger is in good condition, showing some wear and scratching throughout the bottom, which has removed some of the plating. It has a nice aged patina throughout, and the standing oak leaves and acorns are crisply detailed and have good backgrounds.
The plated aluminum crossguard is in similar condition, with a lovely dark patina, with oxidized accents. The details throughout the characteristic eagle are exceptional throughout the head, breast and wing feathering, talons and wreathed mobile swas. The grip ferrule looks to be solid nickel silver, and is in great shape, having been protected by the portepee.
The grip is has faded to a nice light caramel brown, typical of celluloid grips from this period. This grip is in almost perfect condition throughout, with just a bit of wear and small scratches. Wrapped around the grip and cross guard is an original aluminum bullion thread portepee (sword knot), tied in the Heer fashion. It is in good condition as shown, with some light fraying in areas.
The scabbard is a fine example, and is plated steel. This straight scabbard has very crisp, finely pebble grained panels. The carrying bands have an excellent pattern of overlapping oak leaves and acorns, which are nicely enhanced, but also show some wear. The throat is the thinner style, and has dome-headed securing screws on the narrow sides of the scabbard. The finish looks to be silver or nickel, and has been cleaned recently. There is however a good amount of plating loss, and some oxidation into the steel body. However it is dent free, and the patina matches the hilt perfectly.
The blade on this example is in excellent, near mint condition, with no stains or oxidation to speak of. The factory cross grain is entirely intact, and only runner wear keeps it from truly being mint. The needle-like tip is still intact, with no bending, and the edge is still nice, with no chips or sharpening.
The reverse ricasso is etched with the full Ernst Pack & Söhne "Siegfried Waffen" trademark, which features their "Young Siegfried wielding a hammer" logo in the middle:
Siegfried
*ERNST PACK & SÖHNE M.B.H. WAFFENFABRIK *
(Jung Siegfried Logo)
SOLINGEN
WAFFEN
The trademark logo still has all of the original darkening in the background, and is really a choice example. This is definitely a knife that was well cared for, the blade at least. The original leather blade buffer is in place within the deep recesses of the guard.
A very nice example from a rare maker, complete with portepee!
The German Army (Heer) first carried a dagger beginning in 1935. The weapon was worn in lieu of occasions not demanding the wearing of a more formal sword. The dagger design was quite attractive featuring silvered heavy fittings with white or colored grip. The crossguard depicted a Wehrmacht open-winged eagle clutching a wreathed swas.
The pommel depicted oak leafing around the outer circumference. The scabbard had panels of pebble designs. Later produced examples were plated with nickel, and late war-made pieces were unplated, finished in a gray color metal. These daggers are often encountered with an aluminum portepee.
