Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great example of a mid-war production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, complete with its scabbard and belt hanger. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the made by the well known firm of Paul Weyersberg, one of the many different firms run by members of this large blade-making family.
Unlike most example that we see, the blade on this example is a fine nickel-plated example! Additionally, the celluloid grip of this dagger still retains the original ivory color, with just a bit of yellowing. These almost always faded to orange or darker over the years as the material degrades due to light exposure. It has a nice slightly tapered shape, and is tightly wrapped with twisted bullion wrapped wire. It is in very good condition throughout, with just a bit of staining and wear, and a small crack near the ferrule.
The hilt mounts are in very good condition with a lovely lightly worn patina, looking to be solid aluminum alloy with some antiquing in the recesses. The pommel is very good and still shows most of the original detail. The "mobile" swas (hook crosses) on both sides are clear, and oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. There is light wear around the edges, but no major damage, and the hilt is mostly solid on the tang.
The cross guard is also made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows little wear and has great feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas (hook cross) in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still clear. The ferrule looks to be plated steel, and is in great shape, with just a bit of oxidation.
Unlike almost all of the 2nd Model Luftwaffe daggers we see, this example has a lovely nickel plated blade, which we have only had a few of before. The plating is retained almost completely, with only a bit of oxidation and some plating loss on the flats of the blade due to runner wear. There are also a few scattered spots of light oxidation, and multiple tiny dents on the edges, probably from "play fighting" with the dagger. The tip is still intact, with no bending, and the edge has correctly not been sharpened.
This great example was made by Paul Weyersberg of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is etched with PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the Third Reich era. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. For more information please see GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS by J. Anthony Carter.
The steel scabbard is in very good condition, dent free and straight with much of the original plating intact, showing oxidation and plating loss on the sides. It looks like the scabbard was nickel plated with silver over that, which has tarnished to a lovely blue color in areas. The pebbled panels still look great, as do the oak leaf and acorn panels below them. The hanger bands look to be plated aluminum, and are relatively well defined and have hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. They do show some wear due to the soft aluminum alloy. The throat is the wider version seen, retained by flush mount screws on the narrow sides.
Attached to the scabbard is a very good condition belt hanger, with functional pebbled spring clips with a great patina. The buckles and keepers are engraved with the same oak and acorn motif seen throughout the dagger. The clips are the pebbled hinged type, and it looks like the hardware on the hanger is made completely of zinc alloy, with the sliders being aluminum. The straps are in very good shape, showing the bullion on the front well, and the velvet plush material on the back shows light wear, with just a bit of fraying on the strap edges.
This really is a very nice Nickel Plated 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger with its original scabbard, made by a well-known Solingen maker and offered in very good condition. Complete with scabbard and hanger, this dagger is ready to display!
