Original WWII German 2nd Model Naval Dagger with Orange Grip by WKC - Near Mint

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This fantastic 2nd Model Naval Dagger would be a highlight of any Naval collection. It is the product of the finest workmanship performed during the 3rd Reich. Someone paid a lot of extra Reichsmarks for this dagger during the time. It is a classic, early WKC example, and one of the most desirable types of Naval Dagger.

The pommel and crossguard have about 95% of the original fire gilding. The pommel is the style used as an update after the round ball was phased out in 1938. It has very fine detailing throughout the bird. On these upgraded pommels the wreath is highly vaulted with a fine gilded swas in the center.

The crossguard is a typical WKC example. It too retains fine gilding throughout, being at about 90% intact. The guard features well detailed acanthus leaves on the quillons and has crisp button ends. The center blocks carry the usual fouled anchor motif.

The grip is a very attractive deep orange. The grip is almost a pumpkin color. This grip is in perfect condition throughout, being tightly wrapped with twisted brass wire.

The scabbard is the lightning bolt type. It is completely free of dents and has fine, raised oak leaf carrying bands. These WKC bands are larger than most and have serrated eyelets. The scabbard is deeply stamped with palmettes over and under the bands. The lower portion features a design of ermine feet and acanthus leaves. The throat is retained by a pair of dome head brass screws.

Adding to the already considerable excellence of this dagger is the Sailing Ship motif blade. We normally only see this kind of blades on WKC examples made prior to 1938; that is the reason the dagger was originally issued with the ball top pommel, and thus upgraded example.

The mint blade of this dagger is still bright throughout, with all of the frosted backgrounds intact. The obverse features a centered fouled anchor. Below this is a fully rigged sailing ship, coming across the waves towards the viewer. The reverse of the blade eliminates the anchor and features another fully rigged sailing ship, flying ensigns and floating on a bed of floral designs. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the Knight Head trademark of the WKC firm, along with the firm’s initials. The original red felt buffer is still in place.

If you are looking for an invest quality Naval Dagger, this piece would make for a highlight in any Naval collection.
