Original WWII German 2nd Model Naval Dagger by Carl Eickhorn with Portepee - Named USGI Bring Back

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is part of an excellent bring back collection recently purchased directly the family. It is a fine Solingen-Produced totally original WWII German 2nd Model Naval Dagger by Carl Eickhorn, complete with an original portepee tied in the correct Naval style.

This 2nd Model Naval Dagger was almost certainly purchased by a high ranking officer early in the period as the pommel is a 1938 changeover type. It has very deeply inset wings and an impressive vault wreath. The details to this bird are also choice, with a striking eye, beak and breast. The crossguard is a standard Eickhorn type, and has the portepee wrapped around it. The portepee itself is in very good condition, with just a bit of fraying. Scabbard locking button is fully functional, and also in great shape.

The grip is in excellent condition with a bit of age, and a few small surface cracks. The brass wire is in excellent tight condition.

The lightning bolt scabbard is straight and shows almost no wear, The scabbard is stamped with well-defined palmettes around the bands and lightning bolts, ermine feet and acanthus leaves down to the chape. The bands feature overlapping oak leaves and acorns. The rings are the triple serrated type and also show little wear. The throat is retained by two dome head screws.

The blade is an very nice example, with a high quality nickel-plated finish and an excellent fouled anchor etch. The etch is beautiful, retaining 90% of the frosted backgrounds. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the double circle Eickhorn Squirrel trademark, and the original felt blade buffer is in place. The tip of the blade is perfect. Additionally, an engraving pen was used to mark the Army Serial Number Charles Rotter, the soldier that brought them back: CO 324247207.

CW4 Charles G. Rotter USA who in his long career patrolled the US/Mexico border on horseback as a Cavalryman, served as an M4 Tank Commander in WWII, missed Korea, and served in Vietnam as a Logistician to include supporting Montagnard tribes fighting alongside the US SF troops. A fascinating professional soldier who followed his military time by serving a second career as a Zookeeper at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, CO.

Overall an excellent example of a hard to find dagger offered at a nice price,  personalized to the soldier who brought it back from Germany.
