Original WWII German 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a mid-war production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the legendary Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie. The celluloid grip of this dagger is a nice pumpkin orange color, and remains in very good condition throughout. It has a nice tapered shape, and is tightly wrapped with twisted silver bullion wire.

The hilt mounts are similarly great on this dagger. The pommel is crisp and excellent. The swass on both sides are clear, and the oak leaves around it is raised out and heavily hand enhanced. The pommel appears to be solid aluminum, and not plated, so it would not have the blackening seen on plated examples. It does have a bit of wear around the edges.

The crossguard is also made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows some wear and has nice feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still clear. The ferrule is present, and has a lovely dark patina, with fully intact plating.

This scabbard is a fine, straight example, having some of the original plated finish, with a lovely patina. There are many places where the plating has flaked off the underlying steel. The aluminum bands are crisp, with just a bit of oxidation, and have hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. The throat is retained by a single screw on the hanger ring side of the scabbard.

The blade on this example is not nickel plated, which is common for later produced blades. The blade is in very good condition, though it does appear to have been polished a bit, as the factory crossgrain is faint. There is some light staining in areas on the blade, as shown in the pictures.

The reverse ricasso is etched with the "Knight's Head" trademark of the WKC firm, and a large size leather blade washer is in place in the guard. The logo reads

SOLINGEN

Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. The traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists today.

This really is a really nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger, offered in very good condition, ready to display!
