Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely early Pre-War production 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's dagger, complete with its original scabbard. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the well known firm Ernst Pack & Söhne of Solingen. The celluloid grip of this dagger is still the original ivory white color, which is very rare to see! Most fade to yellow and orange over the years due to the instability of the material. It has a nice tapered shape, and is wrapped with aluminum bound twisted wires. There is just a bit of light staining overall, as well as age cracking in the celluloid, but no major damage such as chunks missing. The grooves show a bit of accumulated dirt around the wire wrapping, which is still bright and relatively tightly wrapped.

The hilt mounts of the dagger look to be aluminum alloy, which was then finished with an "Airplane Gray" oxide finish, which is also present on the steel scabbard. The hilt fittings show wear, with a lovely patina of age. The pommel is very good and still shows most of the original detail. The "mobile" swass on both sides are clear and the oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. The pommel still retains some of the oxide finish in the recessed areas, while the rest is worn, particularly around the edges. The hilt is tight on the blade, with no wobble we can detect.

The crossguard is also made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. Like the pommel, the guard has lost much of the original finish, now well retained only in the recessed areas. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still mostly clear. The grip ferrule is steel, and has lost all of the original finish. The leather blade buffer is present in the recess of the guard, showing wear from use.

The blade on this example is nickel plated, something we very rarely see on 2nd Model daggers! Only the earliest produced special order examples were plated, quickly replaced by polished bright steel. The blade is in very good service used condition, with the original nickel plating well retained, but definitely showing wear from cleaning to remove past oxidation. We can see some areas of past peppering near the tip, where the nickel plating is mostly worn away. The edge of the blade is correctly unsharpened, and there is just a tiny bend at the very end of the tip.

The rear ricasso of the blade is etched with the large "Siegfried" trademark logo of Ernst Pack & Söhne, which is in excellent condition. The mark shows their trademark "Young Siegfried wielding a hammer" Logo, surrounded by a stylized banner. The whole trademark reads:

Per J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this firm used this trademark on Army Officer swords during before the war and during the early years. They mostly made daggers so there is not as much information regarding the swords. The company survived the war, until it was sold in the 1960s to another knife company from Solingen, and the maker mark continued to be used into the 1990s.

This steel scabbard is a fine, straight example, which now retains the original "airplane gray" finish at about 40%, showing wear through on the pebbled panels and fittings, while the smooth edges retain much more. It is straight and dent free, fitting the blade well. The bands are aluminum alloy, showing hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle, with some wear around the hanger rings. The throat is retained by two "cheese head" screws on the narrow sides of the scabbard, and is the narrower style seen.

A very nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's Dagger, made by a desirable maker and complete with a lovely original scabbard! Ready to display!
