Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice early Pre-War production 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's dagger, complete with the correct portepee. It is however in an Army officer dagger scabbard, which is identical in size, with different appointments. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by the well known firm Ernst Pack & Söhne of Solingen. The celluloid grip of this dagger has faded just a bit to an aged ivory color on one side, with the other closer to amber in color. These fade to yellow and orange over the years due to the instability of the material and light exposure. It has a nice slightly tapered shape, and is wrapped with bound twisted wires. There is some light overall wear, and some minor scuffs and stains.

The hilt mounts are in similar condition with a lovely patina of age. The pommel is very good and still shows most of the original detail. The "mobile" swass on both sides are clear and the oak leaves around them are raised out and heavily hand enhanced. The pommel appears to be solid aluminum, which has lovely antiquing in the recessed areas. It does have a bit of wear around the edges, as is often seen.

The crossguard is also made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. The guard shows little wear and has great feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling, which is still clear. Wrapped around the grip just above the guard is a very nice original bullion portepee, which has some great period wear to the aluminum bullion thread, which has worn away the plating in areas.

The blade on this example is nickel plated, something we very rarely see on 2nd Model daggers! Only the earliest produced special order examples were plated, quickly replaced by polished bright steel. The rear ricasso of the blade is etched with the large "Siegfried" trademark logo of Ernst Pack & Söhne, which is in excellent condition. The mark shows their trademark "Young Siegfried wielding a hammer" Logo, surrounded by a stylized banner. The whole trademark reads:

Per J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this firm used this trademark on Army Officer swords during before the war and during the early years. They mostly made daggers so there is not as much information regarding the swords. The company survived the war, until it was sold in the 1960s to another knife company from Solingen, and the maker mark continued to be used into the 1990s.

The blade is in very good condition, still showing most of the original nickel plating, though there is some oxidation as well as runner wear through the plating. There is a bit of staining, and the usual swirl marks from cleaning. The tip is intact and the edges are correctly unsharpened. Really a very nice blade here!

The scabbard is a good example, made from plated steel, and is straight throughout with no denting. The original plating is well retained in most areas, though it has oxidized a bit over the years. This straight scabbard has very crisp, finely grained panels. The zinc alloy carrying bands have an excellent pattern of overlapping oak leaves and acorns, which are nicely enhanced, though they do show wear. The throat is the thinner style, and has& dome-head securing screws on the thinner sides of the scabbard.
