Original WWII Escape and Evasion “Silk” Maps For Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland Borders - Spain and Portugal Borders - 2 Maps

Original Items: Only One Set of Two Available. Evasion charts or escape maps are maps made for service members, and intended to be used when caught behind enemy lines to assist in performing escape and evasion. Such documents were secreted to prisoners of war by various means to aid in escape attempts.
During World War II, these clandestine maps were used by many American, British, and allied servicemen to escape from behind enemy lines. Special material was used for this purpose, due to the need for a material that would be hardier than paper, and would not tear or dissolve in water.
Evasion charts produced for the US, UK, and NATO were printed on vinyl sheets in the 1960s. Modern evasion charts are made of Tyvek 'paper', which permit printing of minute detail while remaining waterproof and tear-resistant.
The first map, sheet 43/K, is for the border of North East Spain and South West France at a scale of 1:1,000,000 and is undated. The reference is located on this side of the map and shows important geographical references and international borders. The sides of the map, in the border, it shows which maps it overlaps in order to properly join multiple maps together if needed. The other side of this map is for the border of Northern Portugal and North Western Spain and has the scale box on this side. The map is offered in excellent condition and shows signs of light wear and no significant damage.

The second map Sheet 43/C 43/D is a larger example with more bordering countries featured. The first side features the Legend and Scale, with the scale being 1:1,000,000. This side shows the Holland and Belgium border with the exception of the west coast, North East France and West & Central Germany. The legend shows important geographical references and locations as well as international frontiers and former frontiers. The borders on both sides of this map show where they need to overlap when joining together multiple maps. The other side features two separate maps, the left side is for the South East France, South West Germany and Switzerland borders. The map on the right is for the Belgium and German “New Frontier” at a scale of 1:250,000. The map is offered in excellent condition and shows signs of little use and wear.
