Original WWII British Army Pre D-Day Depot Gate Sign with Sliding Panel

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. In the early months of 1944 Britain was almost sinking with the weight of all the overseas soldiers from the United States and all over the British Empire awaiting the invasion of Continental Europe. Every scrap of space was employed to accommodate these invading hordes.

An obvious way of aiding the problem was for existing units to allow other to also move into their depots and camps however, it became very complicated as to which unit was to end up where. This is one of those Gate Signs which indicated which units were allocated to use that particular facility.

The Depot was the home base to the ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORP and its Title and Badge are on the outside sliding cover. Upon revealing the second panel the various "billoted" units were identified, not by name but, by insignia as shown.

There are SEVEN different visiting units posted at this particular location and each can be identified by it's helmet insignia. We have not researched which is which
but the obvious one is the "DESERT RATS" from the early WW2 North African Campaing against Rommel. The Sign is all of wood measuring 22" X 22". The interior Insignia sign is flat steel sheeting , painted, measuring 20" X 20".

Clearly once June 6th arrived these signs were all redundant and it is amazing that this one survived the war. Shows its age but great to display.
