Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is straight out of the attic ! Absolutely original that has not seen the light of day for maybe nearly 100 years. This is a WWI AEF US Army/USMC M1909 Leather Belt Holster for the Colt or S&W M1917 .45LC Revolver.
The holster is in good condition, though the leather is stiff from age, and does show some cracking on the edges where the leather is folded over. However it is complete, with stitching and rivets mostly intact. The stitching is pulling out at the top, and also the leg and belt ties are missing, but easily replaced. The tie down ring on the bottom of the holster is still present. It has a worn US oval logo on the front of the flap. On the rear of the holster there are additional markings:
G&K is the marking of Graton & Knight Manufacturing Co., Worcester, Massachusetts, who made this holster in 1917. A.G. is the marking from the inspector at that location: usually it was their initials.
This holster is not a left hand design. It was originally designed to be carried on the right side of the waist with the gun in the "Butt Forward" position. The right hand would be used for holding a sword. Please see: page #216 in Edward Scott Meadows book "US Military Holsters and Pistol Cartridge Boxes"
A nice Condition authentic example of a nearly 100 year old holster for your WWI collection. It could definitely use cleaning, but then it would lose that attic find "sleeper" appeal.
