Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of the Rare Swiss Model 1914 Pioneer Sawback Sword bayonet, which was in use by Switzerland from 1914 until well into the 1950s. The bayonet is quite long, being 24 inches in overall length, with a 19 inch long sawback blade. These were intended for use on the 7.5 mm. Schmidt-Rubin M1911 carbine and M1931 Short Rifle (K31).

The M1914 has a swell-point blade profile, where the blade is wider at the point than at the ricasso, similar to the German "Butcher" bayonet. The 1914 blade is flat one one side, with the fuller and edge being ground into the other side. Designated Sägebajonett Mod. 1914 (Sawing Bayonet Model 1914), the M1914 was issued to select troops who would have need of the brush-clearing and sawing abilities of the design. For the most part, this included Pioneers/Combat Engineers, but also would include others such as drivers, blacksmiths, and even musicians.

This example is marked on the cross guard with serial number 61372, which would correspond with the weapon it was issued with. According to production records, the M1911 Short Rifle with this serial number was produced in 1917. The ricasso is also marked with H.S. over a Swiss cross proof mark.

Condition of the bayonet and scabbard are nice, though they do show their age. The hilt of the bayonet has pitting, and definitely appears to have been exposed to the elements for some time. The bayonet catch does however still work, and it would probably fit on a rifle if the channel is cleaned out. The blade has fared better, with a nice worn finish, and no major rust issues. It has been sharpened a few times, but still retains the unique "swell-point" shape.

The scabbard is straight, though does have some dents, and has surface rust over most of the surface. Some of the original finish remains however, and the original leather attachment strap is still present, though in delicate condition.

A nice example of a rare bayonet, ready to display!
