Original WWI Italian Brass Hilt Vetterli M1870/87/15 Rifle Carcano Blade Ersatz Bayonet with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. We have only ever had one of these before, and that was years ago. These are very unusual and consequently quite rare. Produced during WWI, these took a standard M-1891 Carcano Rifle Bayonet blade and mounted it into an all brass hilt in the form of the earlier Vetterli Bayonet Hilt. This allowed it to be fitted to the converted Vetterli M1870/87/15 Rifles in 6.5mm Carcano for rear line use.

Ersatz bayonets are generally almost always associated with WW1 Germany but it other Nations also adopted this technique to press obsolete material into action for use with various weapons.

The bayonet features a solid brass hilt and cross guard, fitted with long leaf spring that runs almost the entire length of the grip just like the earliest Vetterli bayonets of the 1870s. This is attached to a 12" single edged blade with wide fuller, and the bayonet measures 16 1/4" overall.

It comes complete with a fine brass mounted leather M1891 carcano scabbard. Please see Watts & White, THE BAYONET BOOK Page 198 item number 442.

A rare bayonet, much rarer than the 6.5mm Vetterli rifle. In excellent condition, ready to display!
