Original WWI Italian 1891 Brass Hilt Vetterli Carcano Ersatz Bayonet with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Well, we never had one of these before and saw this one at the Baltimore Gun Show in March 2014. This is very unusual and consequently quite rare.

Produced during WW1 this took a standard M-1891 Carcano Rifle Bayonet blade and mounted it into an all brass hilt in the form of the earlier Vetterli Bayonet Hilt.

The Bayonet measures 16.25" in overall length.

Ersatz bayonets are generally almost always associated with WW1 Germany but it other Nations also adopted this technique to press obsolete material into action for use with various weapons.

This one example has a very nice holt bearing markings to the cross guard of "PM448" and has a catch spring that runs almost the entire length of the grip just like the earliest Vetterli bayonets of the 1870s.

The blade, also marked "F.E." has certainly seen better days being considerably pitted on both sides. The blade measures 12" long and has two blood gutters down each side. The scabbard,is a fine brass mounted leather M1891 version.
