Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rarity! We hardly encounter any Russian photo albums, let alone from the Imperial Russian Empire! The album jacket is in wonderful condition but does show its age, containing approximately 90 pictures scattered amongst its pages. It measures approximately 8 1/2"W x 15"H.
World War I was the first major conflict to occur after the widespread use of photography. Soldiers photographed the things that were personally significant as a means of remembering an individualized history in addition to the collective official one. In a way, battlefields functioned as destinations with the soldier as visitor, using the camera to capture the familiar and unfamiliar, the physical journey as well as moments of leisure. This album captures it all.
The photographs, which are still mostly discernable, feature a wide range of activities. The main theme of the album appears to be camaraderie and relaxation for the most part. It shows the same group of soldiers in different countries as well as trench life and manning a machine gun post.
A lovely, rather rare photo album ready for further research and display.
Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the First World War, now that over 100 years have passed. As with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment.
